• Background •

The Centers of Light grew out of the Order of Christ Sophia recognizing the need for spiritual communities that support their members no matter what level of involvement or speed of growth they choose for themselves. The Order of Christ Sophia is made up of women and men who are ordained as Deacons, Priests, or Master Teachers. It is therefore their union and community of support. But most people coming to us are not ministers, nor would it be right for them to be. The Centers of Light were therefore created to be places that anyone of any faith can come to, as long as they are respectful and open to learning and sharing as we do. Through these centers many continue to find real experiences of God, of Jesus and Mary, and deep and moving teachings of the inner mysteries and the power of the Sacraments. The first Centers of Light were opened in 1998 in Boston and Milwaukee; the next two were in Seattle and Oakland in 2001. They have since spread to 15 cities in the US and continue to grow. Mother Clare Watts and Father Peter Bowes are the founders and directors of the Order of Christ Sophia, and of the Centers of Light.
